200GS - I had the thumbshifter version - Nylon DX

Ok its the lowest useable groupset but its also one of the most robust. The rings were replaceable, the mechs shift as well as XT and being minty mint it would sit perfectly on a good double butted frame and shift for another 20 years.

I remember the rings being riveted, not replacable...perhaps as a set...hmmm

In all seriousness it's kind of worth collecting. Often the, er, less good stuff (being kind) is forgotten and in years to come may be super collectable. Or not.

Yup, if the rings came off at all it was all together. I remember wearing the rings out on one and it was way cheaper to buy a whole new chainset, never mind the weight saving I made just by 'upgrading' to STX :shock:

I kept the non-drive side crank arm of that crankset as a keepsake after getting hit with it; I can pop it on the scale and take a pic just for the fun of it.

anybody want to wager what it will weigh???

200gs chainsets had bolt on rings - you just had to find the right version.

I'm afraid having ridden 200GS on my Saracen Sahara in the early 90s it certainly isn't something I'd wish on anyone. Now let's see:

3rd ride out - took a tumble on grass(!) and snapped a brake lever.
6 weeks from new - cogs and chain worn out (oiled and cleaned after every off road ride).
3 months from new - STI units worn out.
6 months from new - one of the riveted chainrings worn out
8 months from new - rear mech rivets started getting loose so that was replaced too.

In fairness the cantis and bottom bracket lasted and worked well.

I gradually replaced with XT/DX having learned my lesson that cheap groupsets do not pay. It was years before I would touch STI rapidfire shifters again (not until 2004 in fact).

200GS really was rather hideous - god knows what 100GS was like (I never rode that).
