Schrader or Presta ?

Presta, because supermarket bikes come with Schraeder

Thats stupid reasoning. Dont see ferraris and the like using presta so they must be cheap. I use schrader for the universal nature of them you can get them pumped up anywhere.

How do rim manufacturers decide on which type to have on which rim? Is it to do with the width of the rim?

I would guess it is to do with width of rim, hence Presta's being found more on road bikes, where a shraeder hole might weaken the rim.

I can't help but think it might be a bit arbitrary with MTB rims.

Around 95 / 96 I bought a new STX / STX/RC groupset (strategic upgrades in certain parts) and a set of wheels to make up a hack / work bike - this was mail order from a major (and still fairly well known bike shop). The rims were to match what was on my main bike at the time (Mavic 230s). When I ordered, I asked for the rims to be with presta drilling - because my existing pair of rims were drilled for presta valves - and I ordered some inner tubes with all the parts (both presta to go with the wheels - or so I thought).

When the order came, one wheel had a schrader valve hole the other presta - they still sent both inner tubes with presta valves, and didn't think to include one of those converter valve-hole thingmies.

The means "I may not be being entirely serious". Your analogy is flawed, clearly it would be insane to use anything other than the single standard for car valves on a car.

I use Presta mainly because I CBA drilling rims out for Schraeder and I like to have the same kind of valve on everything. Although the kids' bikes have Presta because that's what they came with and I equally CBA to go and buy new 14 and 20in tubes just to change the valves.

I prefer Presta for a stronger rim but I've torn several valves from the tube over the years so for me that is a definite drawback. Hasn't happened on the trail luckily but I'm usually more conscious of the danger when in need.

With my suspension bikes having Scraeder valves it seems smarter to get a pump that would service both. Haven't done so but if rim strength isn't a big issue it seems the more logical choice in those instances.

There is of course the thing about strength of rim, a big hole drilled in it to accomodate the schraeder valve weakens the rim, particularly so with thin section rims, so with them a Presta valve would be preferable.

Have you ever drilled a rim out? I have, lots of them, for the last 20 years. It's a TINY sliver of metal that's removed. It's not going to make the slightest difference AT ALL to the strength of the rim. None.

There's more to it than having the same valve. A pump that'll put a reasonably accurately metered 150psi in your rear shock isn't one you'd want to pump a 2.2in tyre up with

I use what ever comes to hand when I need one (my pumps work with both types of valve and rims would be drilled if needed)
I always carry a presta as a spare though

Presta with a little brass convertor ferrule on one valve. Easy peasy.
