I think I've just about sorted payment for the bike and my mind is now turning to how to build it up.
I thought about the usual "How would I have had it in 1995" but that's a bit samey.
Then there's the high end boutique with lots of NOS bits but I can't really justify the cost and the trouble with too much NOS is that I feel guilty riding so don't.
Finally I decided that given it's a Swiss frame, I should go for a mid-nineties Euro-build. I don't really know what that means though. Would it have been much the same as a UK build with a couple of minor tweaks or are there fundamental differences? I'm hoping that members over the channel can help me out here.
I'm starting with
* Black SBIKE Aluminium frame (not a Daytona)
* XT threaded headset
* Black rigid forks (although could be convinced to swap for something with bounce)
* XT drivetrain (Have mechs and Gripshift X-Rays, although the shifters can be changed)
As for the rest ... over to you. The spec should be kind of high mid-range or low-high end.
My only real concession to the age related parts will be the brakes as I hate cantilever brakes with a passion and don't get on with the large levers on Magura Hydrostops. So I might go for HS33s or Vs, but I have to say that I'm tempted with Starbike Hydraulic Vs, just to keep the Euro twist. Questions on these are
* When were they first released? How far out am I really? HS33s and Vs have a mid-nineties heritage.
* What are the brake pads like and how easy are the to work on (bleed, etc)? On a practical level, how easy are they to run?
That's it. Help me build!
