SBDU 1982 531SL Time Trial Special

I couldn't resist and bought another SBDU frameset.

SB5464 from 1982 with original paint and made from 531 SL - it is incredibly light at 1651 grams, almost as light as my Team 753. It has Metric tubing and takes a 27.0 mm seatpin.



Very clear stampings and Reynolds markings on the steerer


It has Shimano vertical dropouts on the rear and is a very early example of the SBDU use of fast back seat stays.




Most of the transfers in are great shape. The top tube 'RALEIGH' has probably suffered the most but the foil head badges and Reynolds transfers are good for 33 years old.

I picked up a lovely Stronglight A9 headset for this frame and fitted it yesterday.



I also have a pair of Simplex retro friction shift levers to fit and an Omas BB so it now has me tempted to start building it up. Problem is, I was only a young lad in the very early 80s and not really sure what the kit of choice was on TT bikes of that era.

So I'm after some opinions on kit; saddle, bars, mechs, hubs, rims etc - I want to try to keep it late 70s early 80s if I can.

Any ideas?

Campag Hubs large flange 28/28's OR 24/24's on maybe Mavic CX18 rims or wolber profil rims, elliptical spokes. 12-17 Straight through block with a Everest de oro chain - just some initial ideas.....

That's kind of how I was thinking about rims and cranks, wasn't too sure about brakes but I'll have a look at those.

I think the couple of the Yahoo group are using Weinmann calipers - both look like 28 hole rims and radial on the front
