Saracen

Heavy

Retro Guru
I picked this up yesterday - low-end but pretty much NOS.

It was the tyres i was interested in - Richey Megabite Z Max.

I can't see this GMax model in any catalogue or in a Google search.

Anyone got any ideas on year or why it's apparently so hard to track down details?

Re:

Gmax was not the model. That's probably an after-market decal or, alternatively, the bike was a promotional item for Gmax (who make motorbike helmets).

The exact model might be impossible to determine since, like others, Saracen probably used the same frames for two or three of the lower end models, which would only have been differentiated by the kit bolted onto the frames: Altus for one model, Alivio for another, etc. If you look in the catalogues for a model with an Altus chainset and an Acera X rear mech you might be able to narrow it down. 1996 would be the first year I would look at.

However, you might find some small print saying something like "The manufacturer reserves the right to alter the specification when they feel like it or can't be bothered looking around for the rest of the Acera X stuff and especially when they want to frustrate folks in the future who want to identify their bikes." :)

Re:

Cheers, that makes sense.

The decals are original - they're all done in a highly reflective material.

I've realised tonight that the Acera cranks were reacalled years ago, so I'll see if Madison will still replace them
