Hi Guys, as you all know I have a Saracen Kili Comp 96 model that I have restored. Thing is I have a big problem. I happened to have sheared 2 teeth off middle chaingring, bike shop says chaingrings are not available for that model, can anyone recommend a shimano chainset that would be compatible ie: spacing between chainrings and roughly the same gear ratios please, really urgently need info as I use this to get to work on.
Many Thanks

Re:

What chainset/rings do you currently have?

Whilst your LBS might not be able to order the correct chainring, I feel sure the combined forces of Retrobike and eBay should be able to locate what you need.

If the chain rings are bolted on, you can replace them. What chainset do you have and what tooth count do you need? As the above post mentions, plenty of parts about, not just worn eBay ones.

Hi, thanks for your prompt reply, from what I can see I have the original chainset ! I really don't know the model number of this. all I know is the components are Shimano Deore LX

Hi Guys, the only info i have is this, Shimano Deore M563 crank with 94mm BCD 5 hole 22/32/42T,
Local bike shop says shimano are not supplying the size of rings anymore, just wanting a compatible chainset
that will work with this and still be able to replace the chainrings when/if they wear out again.

Re:

yeah I had problem finding middle chainring but did get two. I know I sold one and suspect the other but will take a look.

can't see why any 3 chainring chainset of square taper variety won't fit.

Hi thanks for your prompt reply, guy in the bike shop said the problem with using another chainset would be down to getting the spacing between the chainrings right as apperently they are different, gear ratios wouldn't be a problem.
just wondering if any other shimano chainset from that year would be compatible.
Maybe some of the Techie guys could get involved in this.
I just had a thought if there are separate spacers between the chainrings couldn't I just get new rings and use the spacers
with them or would I have the same problem?
Many Thanks

Re:

94mm BCD rings are available, but not as readily, or as cheaply, as the more common 110mm BCD size.

See here:

When the chainrings wore out on one of my bicycles recently I swapped a 94mm BCD chainset for a 110mm one, because chainrings would be cheaper to replace and easier to find in the future.

Pretty much any square taper 110mm BCD JIS chainset will fit, but you may need to change bottom bracket as well to get the right chain line as this varied between chainsets; there's a long list here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html#chainline

Re:

Given the model you have, it's hard but not impossible to find replacements.

Here are a couple, in black or silver, BCD 94mm, many teeth combinations

If you get a new chainset, and it's for mtb and triple, there are only 2 potential compatibility issues:
-big difference in teeth between your current set-up and the new one, that the front derailleur might not cope with. For example, if your current set up (likely) is 44-32-22, and you get a 48-38-28, you might have to move the derailleur upwards in the frame. No big deal
-each chainset is designed for an specific bottom bracket spindle width. If you buy it in the shop, they should order one that matches. For example, your current chainset might be for a 118mm bottom bracket, and the new one is for a 110m bottom bracket. If you buy it yourself, best is to remove your current chainset, measure the bottom bracket width, and then check in internet the specs for whatever you're looking for. Shimano usually includes the recommended width in their product specs. Worst case, a 5mm difference is usually no big deal, and if you finally need a new BB, the square taper ones cost about 12 EUR online.
