Saracen Kili Comp 96 Chainset Problem

Your bike shop sounds like one that is only interested in selling the latest stuff.

Ofcourse he does!!!

Ye olde typical LBS is a one man band who employs his cousin Kevin, a semi-retired old geezer knowledgeable about all things bicycle related who does the repairs and two spotty yoofs called Liam and Josh who know sod all about bikes but are more interested in chatting up the girls.

The owner makes his money from services that cannot be obtained via mail order, not yet anyway, which is fixing bikes. He does not have the cash nor the space to purchase and store every type of bicycle component made since 1955 in the hope that someone may wander in to buy a 1996 Shimano LX chainring that is long obsolete.

Anyway, regarding the spacing of the rings, AFAIK there is no issue using an 8 speed 3 ring chainset with 9 speed chain and cassette and vice versa.

SJS have chainrings to fit your chainset:
58BCD Inner rings: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/58-bcd-5-arm-dept623_pg1/
94BCD Middle/Outer rings: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/94-bcd-5-arm-dept496_pg1/
However, if you get something like the Middleburn Hardcoat, a set of three will be nearly £100.

You could buy a new Shimano Acera square taper chainset for £36: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... prod106885
But, you may well still need a new bottom bracket as the LX M563 uses a shorter axle (107-113mm) than the 122.5mm required by the Acera.

Final option is switching to an external bottom bracket chainset: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod40496
£53, includes the Hollowtech II bottom bracket, and is the standard 4-arm fixing so replacement rings are cheap and easy to get.

Re:

My M563 cranks are 110 bcd and spacers are not needed at all. Curious :?

Easy to find replacement rings on the forum or ebay

Well guys I got fed up trying to source new chainrings, I went and bought a shimano FC-M171 Triple chainset and a Shimano BB JN26 Bottom Bracket axle, all fitted on and working fine at long last. I know I can't change the chaingrings as they are all rivetted but at least if the chainset wears out I can go and buy a highly available one
Many Thanks for all your help.

That chainset must weigh a ton and will be made from the cheapest nastiest materials. Bike shop was talking twaddle about chairing spacing too.

Re:

That makes me really sad - your Kill deserved better :( For another £20 you could have got the Deore I linked to and that would have been far far superior quality.

Re:

Well it turns out my cranks are M560s. But they are 110 bcd as I said, so technically I'm only half a fcukwit!
I too think you chose the worst option, but as long as it works I guess you're happy.
Enjoy riding it, most importantly!
