SAFE or UNSAFE ??

I disagree with the previous posters. I would say that is safe enough, unless you happen to think that pinch-bolt clamps are marginal in the first place.

Essentially you've got 80-90% of the surface of the pinch bolts clamping the steerer, so it's pretty much 80-90% as strong as it would be if the steerer was longer. It's true that you're clamping onto the end of the steerer, whereas the design assumes clamping further down, but the clamp surface is fairly deep and I don't really see it deforming the shape of the steerer unless you clamp it ridiculously hard.

I don't see why you shouldn't try it. If it comes loose, you'll have proved me wrong but I doubt whether you'll do yourself any harm.

Why not modify the stem? You could quite easily remove 5mm of material from the lower edge of the steerer clamp.

You ever been on a bike then next second wheels is pointing 45 degree to what it was befiore?

By the time you have figured out whats happening you are picking you front teeth out of the tarmac.
I know someone who had that happen ti then the dental bills to replace her teth ran into thousands.

You risk assessment is flawed. The may be a low probability of the stem coming off or loosening but the consequences can be fatal.

Think of walking on a 6 in plank raised 3 ft above ground and a 2 ft wide plank raised 100 m above ground.

You are less likely to fall off the wider plank. But if you it is big splat.

i think some of you should stay indoors...in the safe area. bikes have the potential to hurt you....but most don't!;-)
