Why buy a big, thirsty diesel when modern petrol engines give mpg stat's that put a motorbike to shame??

Quantify that statement

Fancy little Fiat 500-style thingy does 60mpg, with a 1400cc engine! Twice what a similar sized motorbike engine will do...

Not the most practical especially if you are used to a Forester...

Except no one is getting close to 60mpg

Proper saab engines are tough stuff. Some tuned there 9-3 2.0turbo to over 660bhp and was still using standard stuff for the majority of the engine :o
Is that still based on the Dolly Sprint lump?

Nope, that was the B engine... Saab developed it continuously since starting to manufacture the already redesigned B engine themselves, right from the start of the contract with Triumph. This was completely redsigned by the late early 80's and was now the B series (B202 etc) that continued right up to the end (ish).

Basically, even a few years into the production, pretty much all that remained the same was the "slant"

G

From Wikipedia:
The first-generation 9-5 was powered by Saab's B205 and B235 straight-4 engines, and from 2002 in Europe by a Opel Ecotec X22DTH 2.2 diesel engine (Saab D223L), replaced in 2006 by Fiat's 1.9 JTD 16V diesel straight-4.

My understanding was that the 9-5 had a Vectra floorpan (stretched) but with a suspension design borrowed off the 9000 to take the bigger weight and larger engines. Certainly the later 9-5 didn't get the later Vectra floorpan.

nah... defo later vectra bits. You only have to see them side by side and the rear suspension matches exactly. Last generation vectra and even the watchdog featured thingumy were used by saab. Even top gear featured them recently.

I stand corrected. Looks like I was the victim of the Saab salesman. All I do know is that you can get them to head off nose-first into the woods if you are cack-handed.

Definitely the hairy-chested petrol ones had too much power for the chassis. My 200hp 9000 would spin its wheels on a wet motorway if you were rough with it.
