Finally managed to remove my RC36s to find the steerer very rusted. Judging by the hex bolts on the crown, the steerer tube can be replaced - is my assumption correct?

Is there anyway of stopping it happening again?

Yes, steerer can be replaced.

Give the new one a thin coat of grease on the outside and spray some Waxoyl inside before instaling, will prevent rusting in future

is it so badly rusted it needs replacing? Quick sand down and it might actually just be surface rust?

pace steerer

Hiya,
saw your steerer thread; give it a clean with some coarse Scotchbrite or similar;better if you can spin it slowly lathe-like. check for any deep pitting, particularly around the section just above the crown. If it is really rusty then replace it[I have new ones in stock at £28 posted] but if it is just surface rust treat it with Waxoyl or thick grease.
Hope that helps
