Sorry if this has been covered already, tried to search and came up with 932 matches...so I'll just post a new Q
I have a nice 9 speed chain left over from another build...any problems running this on my 8 speed 'transmission' :?:
Cheers, HB

non that i can think of - have run many combinations over years and cant think why a slightly narrower chain would make much difference.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong....

Thanks Mr Cheese, couldn't think of one either. I'll bung it on and see what happens.

did I just have another episode.... ?

Nurse! more WD40!

I think its something to do with the yoof forum on MBUK - anything older than 2007 is seen as ooooold.... :P

Actually there will be a problem running it with 8 speed stuff yes. I can't remember the issue exactly, but this is a bad idea as I have tried it and got the most horrible noise with every revolution. You may need to trawl through the old discussions unless someone can quickly summarise the reason.

Been running 9spd on an 8spd XT cassette for some four years and havent found any probs yet - might take another four years to run in...

Yeah, I'm using a 9-speed chain on my KLEIN Attitude... and that's 7-speed. Believe it or not, but I couldn't get the damn chain to shift right on the middle rear cogs so my LBS told me to try a 9-speed chain.

It shifts better than I ever had with a 7 or 8-speed! Maybe something with the cassette or so, but it's a new 12-28 7-speed Shimano compatible (dunno what brand, bit it's damn light!).

Anyway, I guess running a 9-speed chain on an 8-speed cassette should work too then? My LBS told me they always use 9-speeds now for everything that they get in the shop for repairs...
