Prey tell, do you know if I am on the right track regarding the adjustable travel?

yep, three positions on the rear of the shock mounting, also move the front of the shock to adjust the head angle, this is the ultimate fiddlers bike.
the manual is available giving figures etc, set it up short trave and stick a Pace PC36 as it was originally sold, or 140mm and a big fork and go for it.
or even better but proably not to say here, stick a modern air shock, modern fork and wheels and you can get a 28 lb great trail bike.
