I may well have this wrong, but aren't the red Speedhub's powder coated?

Not any more! All of the Speedhubs are now anodized. And it doesn't have the odd looking silver bit on the left side any more. :D

Excellent, anodized sounds much better than powder coated

I love the one in my Nicolai and would very much like another.

Not sure about the weight being out back which is why my Nicolai has it central, but I will get another someday.

I see the idea and for some rides it would be a good idea. but i wouldn't buy one

Tried the shimano alfine...main reason i wouldn't go back to it would be weight, it was on a hybrid belt drive commuter bike thingie where it didnt really matter.

edit:i just looked up the price of one as well just out of interest, if it wasn't coming as standard on a bike i wouldn't pay that to retrofit one.

So, after 4 years, what maintenance have you perfomed or it needed?

Just interested as 4 years on a std set up and it would be dead many times over if used through winter.

Changed the oil in the hub once a year (adviced by Rohloff, but you tend to forget this as you don't notice the change :-) )
Changed cog, chain and front ring once a year (good have waited a few months longer with changing these) They'e still exposed to the elements but run in a clean straight line, you can completely wear 'm out before it will give problems.

The internals of the hub are running better (more silient in the lower gear ratio) now than when they were new, they have to "run in" for a couple of months.

A friend of mine had his main bearings replaced after 5 years by Rohloff ......... for free  ...... as they should have lasted way longer....

My new bike will have Rohloff and Belt Drive, hope the Belt will also fulfill my expectations.....I have my doubts though (can always go back to chain  )

I paid £850 for a bike with one fitted, sold most of the other bits, ended up costing me about £300.

It's a bit heavy and makes the back end slam on jumps and when hammering it over rough ground, but it doesn't wear out like derailleurs, swings and roundabouts innit.
