Rock Shox question *FAULT LOCATED*

I have recently fitted Rock Shox Dart 3 to my RTS, and they dont seem to like the cold!

Their first ride was at Wales, where they offered only 1/2 inch or so of travel for the first few miles, and then froze up. Second ride on them at home, it was an icy ride, so no travel. Final ride on them so far was Cannock, where I got about 1 inch of stiff travel.

However, when I work on the RTS inside my house and its lovely and warm, I can bounce the forks and get around 3-4 inches of smooth travel.

Its frustrating as my Rock Shox Tora's are unaffected by the weather, and my previous elastomer forks (Manitou and Pro-Circuit) never had this problem.

Is there anything I can do?

You've found one of the reasons why elastomers aren't very suitable as a sping medium despite there inherent damping qualities and relative light weight. If you can retro-fit some springs then I'd suggest putting a spring in one leg and keeping the elastomers in the other.
Otherwise, ride faster and pump your forks up and down all the time to generate a bit of heat

I use a speed spring in one leg of my judys and they never freeze up.

I use englund air carts in the other pair and they are fine too.

Whats involved with installing a speed spring, and what are the benefits/costs?

If you mean these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... id=Frogoog forks they are coil, not elastomer.

If they are the forks I'm not quite sure what the problem might be, but there's a lot of folks more technically inclined than myself on UK-MTB.com (link in sig)

Right, I've discovered the problem!

THERE BL**DY BROKEN! :x

Decided at the weekend to read the instructions, to make sure I wasn't missing something really obvious. As I thought, with the adjuster on the top of the left leg, you can alter the pre-load.

So I had a go......really stiff.....its turning.....here we go

it comes off it my hand :shock:


Turns out it had been glued in place!

Needless to say, Pauls Cycles were very apologetic and want them back to replace!

So I'll be RTSless for a week as it makes its way to Norfolk, but looking forward to it coming back all well again and for some proper bouncy riding :roll:
