Rock shox brake boss bolt length

Retro Newbie
Quick question and sorry if it's been asked and answered a hundred times but do 96 judys use a different bolt length? I'm fitting some SLs I had on my E3 (RIP) to my resurrected Raleigh mtrax but the standard 25mm bolts seem too long. I can obviously cut them down but I don't want to if it's not necessary as I'm worried about potentially snapping the bosses if the bolt is too short.

Thanks for the help for a retro newbie!

Hopefully I can help. If your lowers have the removable brake arch then you need long bolts as they need to pass through the holes in this and screw into the legs. If the brake arch is integrated into the legs, you need the shorter bolts. Cutting the longer bolts down would not work either. If you need the shorter bolts I may have some.

The arch comes off and there are two small bolts for this plus the bosses which I unscrewed from the lowers to take the arch off. The bolts which hold the cantis on won't tighten past a certain point though and as this was the same both sides, I don't think it just gunk in the threads. It feels like they are too long for the threaded portion of the bosses. I can take some photos to clarify what I mean.

I totally see what you meant but I wasn't clear in the first post. The bosses screw in fine but the problem is the bolt to hold the canti onto the boss. Sorry it honestly made sense when I read it the first time!

If it is just the bolt that holds the canti on the boss then you should be fine to shorten these, or just buy shorter ones as they are pretty cheap. I've got some xtr m95x bolts that are really long that rarely fit frames/forks but they also come in shorter sizes. Be interesting to know why these longer bolts exist.

It's quite an unusual bolt, and it doesn't look as though a normal one would do the job at all. It's going through the brace, which isn't threaded, and screwing into the main body of the lowers. The threaded part is 14mm and the total insertion is 25mm.

Ah so the Canti bolt itself, not the boss.
Just get a shorter one, they are a standard bolt size.
My M770 V-brake bolts do not fit in the fork bosses as they are too long, just use shorter ones.
I wouldn't even cut them down unless they are something special, just get some others.
