Road Traffic Accident, please take care!

I am writing this after just being involved in a car v bike RTC, I am fine apart from a sore back and shoulder. Was on my way to work tonight at 19.30hrs when a car has pulled across a junction infront of me, I have hit his nearside front wing, somersaulted into the air and landed flat on my back on top of the cars bonnet! 1 metre either way and it would have been alot worse. I was wearing a helmet, reflective clothing and had lights on my bike, the driver still didn't see me. Thankfully he stopped and is going to pay for the damage caused to my Cotic, front wheel is knacked but touch wood everything else is fine, will check in morning.

My message is this, always wear a helmet, as far as I am concerned there is no arguement not to, make yourself as visible as possible and always assume that the car driver hasn't seen you.

Close call. I did that once. :shock: Was the driver apologetic? Any reason why they didn't see you?

WARNING!! WARNING!!

Don't be too keen to get him to pay in a hurry. He is liable and you may have an injury that takes a few days to come out, like whiplash or rotator cuff. Keep and eye on yourself and DON'T ACCEPT ANYTHING IN FULL AND FINAL SETTLEMENT FOR AT LEAST A FORTNIGHT!!!! Let any injuries come out.

BTW, check and see if your toptube and downtube are 100% straight underneath behind the headtube and that your fork steerer is still in perfect line with the forks. These things go easily in a head-on crash.

glad your ok bud.........been hit by a car myself.

i was on the way home from work on my cannondale, new bike with £600 of extras just added......heading along a main road at night with lights on.

car pulled out of a junction to my left, i just had enough time to lift my left leg clear of his bonnet before it smashed into my seat tube :shock:

i went over the roof of the car landing head first into the road, fractured skull, blood everywhere.

was dragged off the road, shock came in and i just wanted up and on my bike......though it was now shaped like a banana!

was advised to see medical specialist by police, guys insurance company only paid £600 towards my £1200 bike and i also got £3000 for my injuries......doc said id suffer from neck/back pain for atleast 6 months.

this was in 1999 so things may of changed now.

my advice, take your time and get all his details checked, and get the bike into a shop for an assessment and see how you feel in a few days.

Driver didn't see me because I wasn't car shaped I suppose, who knows. He was apologetic even after all my expletives! I think I will drop the bike off at 18bikes so they can have a proper look at it before I settle with the driver, I think I will contact his insurance company as well. He is going to phone tomorrow. I am still a bit shakey and I do have a sore back but it could have been so much worse, I was literally 1 metre away from being in front of him and probably then underneath him!

yeah, you wont feel sore until maybe the next day, when the adrenelin wears off!

guy who hit me was a teacher, cops sorted it all out for me as i was just 19 at the time, i just wanted to get a new bike atleast..........ended up with more.

your forks,headset/frame could be knacked, as will your bars/stem if they have took a hard knock too........could end up costing you later on if not seen to first hand.

Lucky escape by the sounds of it, glad your ok, biggest hit i have takenwas when a lorry pulling out of a side road failed to see me and pulled out knocked me off and then drive over top of me and dragged me 100 yards up the road with me underneath.

My 6 month old Marin Palisades was a mess and so was i, various fractures of the skull, broken jaw, severe grazing and a massive friction burn from the strap on my ruksack slicing through my arm, this happened in daylight and i wasn't wearing a helmet, miracle i'm still here.

Still got the newspaper cutting with a picture of the twisted Marin, must scan it and post it up.
