Road Riders

Re:

Up til now I've always just use my MTB shoes and touring spd's while on the road. Just wondering who uses proper road shoes? Don't want to end up waddling about like a duck, but with the new road bike arriving on Monday I have been contemplating them.
Pro's and Con's?

Re:

Disco slippers, look gay, make you look and sound like a transvestite, slippery as fcuk off the bike ............................. you should get a pair

clubby I use the correct slipper for the occasion, the big cleat and stiff sole ride well and make you waddle like a duck off the bike, whats not like

Kaiser cleared for the laidlaw, gies a shout if you get the nod

I use road shoes, Shimano RO88, the soles seem much stiffer than even my MTB SPD cycling shoes. I had thought about using the same pedals I have on my MTB, but in the end I gave in and bought road shoes and some SPD-SL pedals. I have to say though that the "disco slipper" and big platform pedal seem to be very comfortable for hours in the saddle.
I've not started shaving my legs yet though

You should be considering getting proper shoes and pedals, its a common question and the answer is invariably why are you concerned about walking? 99.9% of the time you should be pedalling and tbh road shoes aren't that bad to walk in these days. If your still thinking of sticking with mtb shoes then the best thing you can do is hand that Canyon over and I'll get you something with a basket :P

Pro's: Stiffer and should be comfier over distance, though some very stiff shoes trade in a bit of comfort. They will be significantly lighter too. Decreases the chances of 'hotspots' occurring though some folks don't have a problem with this.
Con's: Walking isn't as good as mtb shoes, probably (FWIW my carbon soled mtb shoes are still not that elegant to walk in). The soles tend to mark easily and the weatherproofing isn't that great (generally)

I know, I know, it's just my cycle shoe rack is starting to rival Emelda Marcos! I was pretty much at the buying stage anyway, I just needed a little more justification.
Walking is only a concern as I don't want to drop my ice cream or cake hobbling about on massive cleats.

Clubby - on a road ride even I use road shoes and cleats - retro cleats of course but they make a huge difference, I do swap them to flats for commuting though but that only takes 2 minutes.

Back from first test ride and amazed by just how quick the bike feels. Knocked a minute and a half off my time for the local clubs hill climb course. Feels amazingly comfy for such a stiff responsive frame. Really agile but also really stable which surprised me. Wheels will take a bit of getting used to with the carbon rumble. They sound almost like a train going along. Very different from the silent glide of my vintage campag wheels.
Pedals ordered, went a bit mad and ordered Dura Ace ones. CRC had a shimano 10% off which along their crazy pricing took them to £75 off. Still pricey but went for them as they had the version with a longer axle, which is useful as I often have problems with heel rub on cranks. Tried on a pair of Specialized shoes at lunchtime, but they were very narrow compared to their mtb ones. Need to head to a bigger town at weekend and try and find a better selection.
