Had a very bad abscess last week, pain kept me up two nights running until the antibiotics kicked in on the third day. Yesterday they concluded that the tooth can not be saved and it was extracted. Now I am on a liquid diet, while the gum heals which is not fun or filling. At least they gave me some pain meds!!!

Did you get to keep it?

Keep swilling out with salt water(warm not hot obviously

Last resort with an abcess is to burst it. yucky sounding but not really. I expect it depends exactly where it is but as its the abcess itself causing the pain if you 'suck' on the affected tooth the vacuum can cause it to burst. Once the pressure is off the pain subsides considerably

Anyone who has met me will guess when it comes to dental ive had it all . Including the original consultant being struck off

Oil of cloves is a good temporary relief of toothache so its a handy thing to keep in the cabinet but for you old chap i would say a warm solution of saline swilled around (dont swallow  ) and a supply of ibuprofen.
Mouth heals very quickly because (as you may know) saliva has healing properties

Ha! thanks for the advice much appreciated.

Unfortunately I did not get to keep the tooth but we are going to have a "funeral" for it tonight.

Was it one foot on the chest and heave, or out in bits? There was a bit of scalp attached to mine. Will be sore for a while. I found ten year old malt was the best medication.

you'll be wanting one of these - my bottom left equivalent

I posted this before but relevant, one thing is that with nothing opposite the one below will ultimately be affected so will need a bridge / implant or something

A co-worker offered to give the above technique a go but I opted for "modern dentistry"

Probably will get an implant though they are quite pricey, and I don't like the idea of a bridge.

Burst abscess with a sterile needle and swill with whisky/ vodka. Pain goes away without the need for antibiotics. Affected tooth is pretty much toast so it will still end up being pulled or, as in my case, snap off unexpectedly leaving you with the gap toothed gipsy smile.

If I wasn't handsome before I'm definitely not now! If I could afford to get it done I would... But I'm not that vain yet

...and it looks like I'll need a good £3000 to do get it done

I hate the dentist-but necessary sometimes-good you got the pain meds to see you through, Steven. I'm still gimping around with a cane from last weekends crash, but getting better every day :)
