we all know the answer but probably don't want to admit to it.....

The answer is to check your rims regularly - get your micrometer out.

If you can't be bothered with all the faff, the German TUV have you in mind (if I have this right) - TUV approved rims now have to have a wear indicator in, usuall in the middle that goes all the way roud, if you wear down so that you can't see the indicator you replace the rim. Most manufacturers are introducing this in all markets rather than produce rims specificaly for Germany. Can't remember where I got this from so I could be wrong.

also keep an eye out for small 'dot(s)' or an X on the rim to gauge wear.

how do you using a micrometer to gauge rim wear?
doesn't the clinching point of the rim stop you from checking the worn portion?

Not a micrometer that you need its a calliper

Im sure theres some irony in there somewhere

If you do,you could think on getting ceramic, hell of a lot less chance of it going concave
