Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful. I'm guessing the serial no. details would make mine a 1992?. The seat tube has an i.d of 27.2mm which is spot on for Reynolds tubing, not so sure about Columbus though. The forks weigh in at 680grams so they're not too shabby weight-wise either.

my Ribble is 653 "record" which is a slightly svelter 653 tubeset. It's a biggish 56cm frame

frame weighs 1800g with a quality flamboyant paint job. Forks 640g

I think this is a Peugeot - if I have learned how to attach a photo, you can see my 653 from 1990 - same cable guide, same ridge on bb shell, the serial number and the larger letter on the other side, etc. In 1992 Peugeot used Columbus and Reynolds 708 (amongst other tubing) so may still have some way to go to resolve what it actually is. If I recall correctly, the seat post is 26.8, but can check if needed. If it is 708 you should be able to see the flats inside the seat tube.

Thanks for the reply Chat Noir, and to everyone else for their help, it has proved very useful,

I've stuck my finger up the seat and down tubes from inside the b/b shell and sure enough I can feel flat sections on the internal walls of the tubes, so a 1992 Peugeot frameset built from Reynolds 708 tubing it is.
