Reynolds 525 tubing, your thoughts please

Hi folks,

I really shouldn't have looked, but last night I found a make of frameset that I'd been looking for, for many years.
I've only seen them made from 525 or 753, and this is the former. The latter I've never seen for sale.
I was just wondering what your thoughts/experience was of this tubing is. Is it much heavier that 531? Does it build into a bike that feels racey, or I'd it more of a touring tubeset?

If you have a tube replaced on an old 531 frame they put in 525. I guess it's because the nearest to 531 is now 525 ?

525 is butted chrome moly; 725 is the heat treated version. The heat treatment gives the tubes higher tensile strength, which means they can be drawn thinner and still be strong enough = lighter frames.

In the real world, any difference will depend on how the frame is made: I've got two bikes both made with heat-treated cro-mo, simillar angles, same size, but one is significantly lighter than the other and they ride differently - not worse/better.

If you like the frame get it: the difference in weight won't be much compared to 725 (could easily be offset with component choice), and any difference in ride characteristics will be completely subjective.

525 is essentially 21st century 531. Unlike 531 it is weldable.

I own a 525 Reynolds Framed Rocky Mountain Hammer its 99 so not retro
its a perfect frame for touring on ,

i think some Thorns are 525 Tubing ..
