I stopped watching or even being remotely interested in pro road racing about 20 years ago. Floyd Landis being thrown off the TDF did it for me. Having said that I do occasionally rewatch classic races (on VHS) from the epo days,; the 1995 Worlds in Duitama with Indurain aggressively controlling the race ahead of Pantani on a crazy hard course, with massive crowds of spectators everywhere. The 1996 Paris Roubaix with three Mapei riders Bortolami, Tafi and Musseuw off the front for the last 50 miles And the 1997 Amstel Gold where Riis just rides away from the rest as if they are not really racing (they are). Suppose this is my guilty pleasure where I know the riders are charged up but I like the riders, the classic bikes and tech and aggressive riding.
Super charged. In the field. On the road. There are the occasional WTF moments of doom or glory in one day Classics.
And in retrospective it is more of a WTF. Worth watching and historical understanding IMHO.
