I guess there is only so many variations you can build and this site has probably seen them all, wether it be road or mtb. Judging by the responses or lack of them to build threads are people just becoming bored with it ?

Definitely some of this. It's the same parts bolted to different frames, which don't vary that much. Most of the unicorns have been found now too. Essentially you're looking at another nice bike. No great skill involved in assembling one.

A few threads where people are remanufacturing parts are quite interesting though.

Good comments, I think it splits between two groups, collectors and riders. The first group won;t wnat to damage their prides and joy (getting those NOS tyres muddy etc). The latter are out for a play.

I love the idea of a try-out, 'does it match the hype BITD' type activity. However the demographic if most of us is older and time-poor...such an event is a big thing to organise.

...and as mentioned we are spread all over the place, so getting many people together wont happen often.

Look at mayhem earlier this year for example, plenty of us there and some had travelled soooooo far, that probably wont happen for a short ride or just a social.

I like others struggle to get enough time away from the day job and family to attend anything, but I certainly try and am keen to meet other likeminded idiots with bikes for the laff of it. Looking forward to the peaks ride too (although Im still only 50% chance of making it, still working on the boss) should be a fair group and a decent but not daft distance. good balance I reckon.

I think if your wanting to keep the site alive and growing then you should focus more on the newer members who maybe havent seen all these bikes and maybe have one themselves they would like to restore or build. To keep on saying that " i have seen it all before, and this is boring and you have no skill" is kind of negative and will not, in my opinion, help newer owners/members want to join this site and show off their own pride and joy.

The site should be for everyone and if someone feels they have "seen it all before" then maybe its time for them to move on.

And i like the decades idea, but would the retro cut off remain or would all decades be classed as retro?

Re:

Two things:

With an 'official' come-along-and-try-it session, will lack of insurance kill it? I.e. bike falls apart, and hurts the rider - then what?

Second, although we've talked about the super-rare Bush-Wellman (American) beryllium bike - where is it now?

I'm not saying I don't like see what others have done, but with 47000 + members and maybe only 400 or so regular posters there seems to be little to keep the other 46600 members interested. Obviously no one has the time to be on here constantly (well maybe some do  ) but there isn't much to keep the sporadic visitors coming back very often. Looking back at the RB history there was a more involved culture with rides organised on a regular basis.Things change and so do people priority thats part of life. It seems the bottom of the bucket is falling out but instead of repairing it the owner would be more inclined to get a new one (And yes I am pointing the finger at John) it seems he has little or no interest in this forum any more. I don't care how busy you maybe, years of no updates to the home page, peoples avatars is a clear sign to me he's not bothered.

I'm happy to organise rides, I can look into BC's offerings to support these ( I've ridden away from CTC/CUK for good reasons) it's just there's hardly anyone wants to come down here BUT a group ride in the Elan Valley area with bothies chucked in I'd definitely promote

That's an interesting one, I would look at the views, but these would tend to be low unless it an ongoing build thread with detail as there is no point going back to the read.
The lack of 'like' or similar means few will notify their read.
I read but often don't post as I have nothing to say other than like it or cables to long..

I’m sticking my neck out here but how about a leisurely pace ride sometime, where we swop over bikes and discuss their merits like they do in bike mags ? Maybe make a video, kind of like a Top Gear review, location story for Retro Bikes ?

You rarely get any info on these garage queens just amazing BOTM pucs etc. There are lots of bikes id love to try I have never ridden. Marin/Manitou FRS, Zinn, Mantis, Dansons’, Specialized Epic etc yep mostly top end bikes I admit. Bring an old scuffed seatpost and no crazy stunts or stuff likely to damage our P&Js just 15mins per bike or summink ;)

Any takers ?
I let anyone ride my bike, just ask.
No-one can do anymore harm than I do to them.

On our rides, they are often 'bimbles', though few this year and last. Perve over the bike, take the piss, and few have been long and most could easily be cut short (and have).
I always thought that was the retro way.
I do like cafe and pub stops, some seem to just want to ride though.

Rolling RetroBike years.
THERE is NOTHING stopping people putting and chatting in the retro 1998+ area for these RetroBikes. It why it is there. People just need to use it.

Rides
If you are going for a ride, pop it up on here, see if anyone turns up. If not, no worries you were riding anyway.
This can build a group of you,it might not.
But then the group needs to start doing this, not just a few 'leaders'.

Just do it, you don't need permission to set up a ride or post pre or post 98 RetroBikes.
