Retro rims...?

So, I've got this Race Lite frame that I've had powdercoated, got new decals for (thanks Gil!) and got all the bits for, except rims. It's mainly xt from ca. 1992 - not flash but reliable and functional.

My dilemma now is, do I try to get rims from the same period, or do I just get some XC717s? They would be the only thing on there that wouldn't be from the early- to mid-nineties, but NOS rims are not that easy or cheap to come by, and modern xc aren't glaringly different from rims of that period.

Any thoughts/advice?

Will post some pics when I get a camera!

Thanks
Matt

MAVIC 231CD's seem to pop up quite often, although usually as a whole wheel. they would be period correct, if you when the mordern route you could always add period correct decals - but you'd need to remember that when it came to selling them.

I was able to find (with help here) Bonty Red and Blue spots new that I built up.
But if you are going to really really ride the bike get new ones, they are so much stronger.

(Got a Wiennman Bontrager new if you want it.)

I don't think period correct rims are that hard to come by personally, admittedly they are not common as muck but there's quite a few around.

Hello again fella

Just spotted your thread – thought you might be interested in these

(hopefully the link will work – if not go to their homepage and look under wheels)

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/category.asp ... 2&sfile=1=

Can't promise they've still got them as they're not always that quick on updating the site – and there are a few useless/rude members of staff.

Here's hopin'

cheers

Based on experience :), a nos set of MA40s will set you back 60+

They're hard to come by, but I know of some 36 h I can point you to if you're interested. They've got no 32's left.

I don't remember seeing a NOS set of RM17s or RM20s in the last 12 months.
Same for BCXs. You'll more likely get hold of a used / built wheelset.

BCXs are good (on the SJS link)- I'd go for those, though they're quite wide.

...still kicking myself for passing on a lot of cut down original Bonty MA40s a few years ago.

oh, and a Bonty is never flash :). Form meets function.

Well if anyone can point me in the direction of any of the following NOS rims in 32 hole (at a reasonable price! ) I would be very grateful:

Mavic 117 SUP CD (Ceramic or non)
Mavic 217 SUP CD (Ceramic or non)
Mavic M6 Oxygen
Mavic MA40
Mavic M261 (CD or Silver)
Mavic M231 (CD or Silver)

Cheers!
