Retro murder?

I prefer a more romantic point of view.

Surely, the only real value in the frame was, as the OP points out, its originality. Before the makeover, it was at least a sort of time capsule for its era: the colour scheme, the decals (which are quite informative), the frame and fork in context.

A nice bit of ephemera from the past, it was akin to that old cinema ticket you find in a forgotten suit, or an inscription in a second-hand book ("Happy birthday, Jane. Hope this gives you some ideas for your cake business. Food for thought! Lots of love, Auntie Sue. x")

But now - well, it's a crap red bike that's good enough to leave out in the rain.

It's a bike and should be ridden, if the mods make it more rideable then what's the problem?, I'm expecting to be shot down in flames when I eventually finish my E3 with disc brakes and X9 9 speed drive train and worst of all black sidewall tyres on modern wheels with cartridge bearings, but if it makes it more usable and keeps me riding it then in my opinion I've succeeded in my rebuild goal.

No intention to intrude on anybody's preference. But the ad is in the Oldskool/Vintage section. There was nothing wrong with the original paint and decals. And the post wanted 7,000 pesos or around BP105 for the FRAME ONLY. "Scratchless, pristine condition, Original, Made in USA" it says. Well it doesnt look like it anymore. If I wanted a plain, red frame I'm not spending 105 pounds on that. I can get a china red frame for 10 pounds or less any day. Peace y'all. :)

Agree with you. He has a made f**k up of that mtb.

while i understand it is not a particularly special or rare frame i think the rebuild is awful, bland, boring and not very well thought out.

would have been much nicer to keep the original paint and look of the frame and a more sympathetic build would have been a much better option
