Restyling or reworking early classics - is it wrong ?

Did Kona not do a mad splatter-paint finish at some point? Cinder Cone? On white background?

They certainly did check out my Cindercone link in signature

Of course it's not wrong. It's your bike, do what you want with it. It's not like there are only 2 left, or it's historically significant in some way.

Spot on

ditto..I have done it 4 times..powder coated.. Some of the die hards get a bit anal..but heyho..as chopper and Retro Spud says its your bike..get some photo's up, decals wise Gil-m did quite a few for me with different colourways/slants on different designs

Hydrodipping, thought about it just for fun. A friend was setting up some kit so I proposed to donate a frame for him to play with, and once it looked good to build and ride it. But he got a job instead.

I gather tubes are a pain but some chaotic pattern might work OK.

I did a search online and you can see some frames have been done. As you say, a pattern will likely work best.

Re:

Do it. I regret not going through with a project which would have taken an old saracen estay from 90s bang up to date with modern kit, and a paint job I'll never now be able to do. Idea was to have my kids paint their own designs on a white powder coat, then clear coat it. They've grown up a bit now and their drawings have evolved and not now as kiddy sadly.
