Restore or not? 1987 Fisher Mt Tam

Very cool frameset! I would definitely go for a complete refurb and cut the fork steerer to suit.

I can sense this is going to another one of your flawless builds :D

Gert 'er painted in a nice fade. My '88 is one of my favorite bikes to ride.
And like others said, you should cut the fork down and do it up. A P2 wouldn't be right, and you aren't likely to need that large a Tam fork are ya? Looks like you might have to cut down the stem's quill too.

Nice start to a winter project!

I'm with the she's nice- keep'er crowd. Too bad you sold your other TT Mt. Tam, or you and your wife could potentially have a matching pair, or would that be hokey.

One suggestion, no one has made yet, (well, RockiMtn eluded to it), build it up; use spacers for now, before committing to the cut-down. Have your wife ride it, to see if she takes a liking to it. If so, commence the build. Maybe even sent it to TT himself for paint and finish 8)

I reckon there's enough opinion here!

But I'll chip in anyway as it's Sunday morning

Paint: Original paint is pretty far gone ~ can we see bare metal?
Wife: Wife is gonna use it and doesn't like tatty paint
Fork: As previously observed, this F and F is the best match you are gonna get, so cut and rethread and get them painted at the same time

The real question is: Who gets to decide on colour? You ir the Mrs?

Gil has that period decals on file, as he sorted me with some for my 87' Montare XT a while ago

Lovely frame, and those 'Bulge' bars are gorgeous. That could be made into something really special 8)

On the grounds that one day you (or a subsequent owner) might NEED extra height at the front, I'd keep the fork steerer as is and use an ahead set and stem. It's costing me a lot to convert all my bikes to "more upright". I know can get extra long quills, but if anything they look even worse than spacers and a clamp on stem.

Repaint? I think yes.

Might be hokey. :) I am hokey enough already. I am going to be riding the Timber Comp....can't wait.

Spacers....might be a good idea to try for a while. I like the idea of sending it to TT. Might give him a ring this week.

Rocco,

Forgot about this one! What did you do with it??

Cheers,
Bart

Hi Bart, still have it. It is in line to be worked on after the Timber Comp. I have most if not all the correct bits for it so now all I need is time.

I am leaning toward the cutting but might try to build it up with spacers before paint or anything and see how it feels.

Colour will be original or the blue fade from the later originals (see my Mt Tam link in my sig) or maybe even the green and yellow fade as seen on some of them....I can't do anything else but original type. Too anal to change that.

BTW (some of you might know this already)...in my last conversation with TT he mentioned that the blue fade paint jobs were referred to as Boy Scout and the yellow and green as the John Deere.

I really like using all original bits and because I am older than dirt I am not really going to get any taller. As a matter of fact I am getting shorter. Over time I might shrink into this bike. :)

But it really is intended for my wife so we will see how it fits done up the way it is and go from there.

If we can't use it I will move it along and get something that fits. I really like restoration back to original.

Repaint is defo in the cards.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I do appreciate it.
