Hi all, bought this off the bay recently with a seized seatpost as a frame only with the intension of a retro/modern build as I didnt want to change my 97 lavadome from its circa xc flavour , but since riding it I think I might put this back to standardish and modify my lavadome instead ,why you ask?
because its an 18" with 100mm bombers and the lava's a 16" with 80mm bombers so swap the forks and the smaller of the two would suit me as a more as an everyday useable bike and keep the other retro. I will put in some miles on it first to see which I prefer as an xc bike and try and make a decision on that ,confused yet ? me too.
anyways here it is with m750 groupo and bonty cranks (shed build)

Nice bike, but I would keep the frame/forks as they are - and you may have to anyway. I am afraid the Cinder Cone is actually a size 19, not 18, so it has a head tube 4cm longer than the size 16 Lava Dome - so more than likely the steerer on the 80mm Bomber is too short for the Cinder Cone.

Also as far as handling is concerned, the size 16 has a slightly slacker head angle than the size 19 anyway, so if you combined that with an over-long fork, you would have really slow steering. Unless that is you fitted a really short stem to compensate - in which case you would have a very short bike.

Better to fit a short stem to the size 19, which might otherwise be too long? And even the size 19 does need a shortish stem to make best use of a Z1.

cheers for the info Anthony, thats cleared that problem up
going on a long ride in a min so I will be able to compare the ride,
do they make a size in between the two I have?
you can see the geometry of the two together and I see what you mean about the head angle ect,

OK, well you can strike most of what I said there. They measure size from centre of bb to top of seat tube, so the Lava Dome is actually a size 18 and there's only one size between them. The head tubes are still 2cm different though, so it may not be feasible to swap the forks round.

 pardon my ignorance , I had measured center to center ,
rode it today and it was great ,to be honest it felt like it fits better than the lava and im loving the longer travel of the Z1's, its no where near as agile as the lava dome but it will make a great trail bike,

nice bikes 8) like the 97 Kona colourscheme

those Bontrager Superstock wheelsets are not often seen - radial lanced and quite lightweight - I have only a frontwheel of them left; "lost" the rearwheel when loading the bike in the car BITD

Two lovely bikes. How easy did the seatpost come out?
easy , I put it in the vice upside down clamped the top of the post and turned the whole frame untill it went bang and started to loosen,

magas,
the super stock rear freewheel has collapsed so trying to locate another at the moment, but yeah what a great wheelset,

Are you sure the red bombers aren't 63mm travel? I think someone of here said that up to a certain year all Z2's were 63mm and yours look to have a similar length to mine.

Carl.
