Removing cigarette smell from house

I can tell you from bitter experience that once the carpets are out, you'll notice the ceiling.

If it's been papered, you'll want to rip it out. If it's anaglypta it'll be even more fun!

I had my bathroom redone after some water damage. All went well till they discovered the asbestos ceiling :x

Bowls and and bowls of white vinegar left all round the house, change the vinegar every 48 hrs should suck up the smell in around 2 weeks. 5 litres of this avalible from Booker wholesale for about £3 a time.

Have to agree with others..not the fish though

Gut the room, carpets curtians etc then a fresh paint ..don't pay extra for those fancy shmancy paints..the cheapo's do the same

Any difficult areas a bit of warm water and carbonate of soda before paint

Get a decorator to quote you for the job for the whole house..get a quote also to re-carpet..then use the quotes as a barganing tool..then do it yourself..the decorating anyway

well this might seem like a good idea...... but personally as i work as a craft mason.... things like this piss me off !!! getting a quote from someone when you have absolutely no intention of even letting them have a slight chance of doing the job is wrong.. you are wasting the guys time... as all quotes are usually free. unless you tell them the score and buy them a couple of pints !!..

but yer john.... I have renovated many places and the smell should be easy to get rid off.... basically rip out the carpets.... clean/sugarsoap all the woodwork. clean all the walls .... complete re-paint undercoats.. and top coat.. several coats on the walls...
and i reakon job done !! :)

also while you are doing that look at doing the ceilings.. you might as well if you have the cash and everything is being ripped out.... if they are papered or artexed etc etc.... get them skimmed.. it will add value to your house and looks so much better....you should get a good rate for the ceilings if you have them all done at the same time with clear and emtpy rooms.. plus also back to the original point it will help to remove the smoke smell.

Nothing personal magic

But when it comes to what I do with my money..only I make the decisions

The tradesman may be someone I have used in the past and will do again..but it doesn't mean everytime I get him to price me a job he has an automatic right to my cash and I shouldn't choose to do it myself if I wish too.

Those kinds of trades men rarely last long when it comes to my hard earned

i think you have missed my point you should really read the posts properly.. ...

I didnt say he has an automatic right to your cash !!!... I just said i dont think its right if you have no intention of them doing the job in the first place.. like i said if you let them know the score before hand .... its not a problem...
dont get me wrong... this type of thing happens all the time.... its not a big issue, just saying it will piss the decorator right off if he ever finds out he wasted time on a quote he was never going to get...

I dont really care anyway... im just saying as i have first hand experience of this.... i was asked to quote for an insurance job. ( rebuild a garage that was damaged by a car).... i then found out that i had no chance of ever getting the job.... and the owners allways planned to do it themselves.... i wasted 3-4 hours putting a quote together plus the fuel getting to the job and the phone calls to suppliers etc etc....
the funny thing is ... the garage was built so badly by ther owners.... they had to call another firm in to knock it down and do it properly  .... and the firm they called in wasnt one of the 3 local firms they originally got the insurance quotes from... as they were fully aware that they are now what we craftsmen term as "cowboy customers" !!!!

anyway its off topic now...

Possibly on again. To reply to one correspondant of course would prefer a property that is utterly mint but the condition is reflected in the price.

Anyhow it's quite modern so hopefully new carpets and paint will sort it out. Certainly no wallpaper or similar. And even opening the windows, been unoccupied for a few months with ashtrays in a couple of rooms.

Probably repaint it myself (if it happens). Any carpet fitters on here from the Midlands area fancy some work ;) :?:
