Removing cigarette smell from house

..don't pay extra for those fancy shmancy paints..the cheapo's do the same

Can't agree with this as you get what you pay for to a point. Keep away from cheap paint as it does not cover as well. To get a good finish you'll end up using twice as much so it'll cost the same and mean more work for you.

When I worked as a decorator my gaffer told me the reason for this. Something to do with pigment content I seem to remember :? He always swore by Leyland or Dulux Trade (has to be 'Trade').

If you sugar soap the old paint make sure you go back over it with fresh water.

+1. Once got some Homebase bog-basic emulsion, the stuff was like water. Took about 95 coats. Elsewhere, though, it saved watering down some decent paint to size fresh plaster with :)

Household ammonia is great for removing tobacco stains on plastic fittings, and can be if well diluted with water, be used on paintwork, not as I found out, neat stuff strips paint, no more nitromors for me, ammonia is cheaper.

Also ammonia is good for cleaning out the oven, just put a bowl of it in an oven overnight, next day just give the oven a wipe, the grease and crap just wipes off.

Other ideas iclude vinegar.

Fish aside some good advice.

Just waiting to hear on said house.

Not had much luck with cheap paint either.

A bucket of old fish next to the hot water tank in the airing cupboard will get rid of the fag smell easily.

Then how would you remove the smell of old fish

Cigarette smoke is good at removing an old fish smell.

Next door are very heavy smokers and despite the good quality of the building (1930s semi) I can smell old ashtrays at night at times.

New carpets and a re-paint should get rid of the smell no worries. If you're keeping the old curtains get them cleaned. If the paint is badly stained with nicotine then give it a good sponge down with sugar soap before painting. This will stop the stains coming through.

Roger's Profanisaurus refers to the above creamy-brown colour as "fagnolia" ;)
On a serious note, +1 for sugar soap, seems to be a bit of a decorator's cure-all. And I'd agree with remarks about replacing old carpets and other furnishings - get shot of those and most of the odour problem will be solved.

David

P.S. Irrelevant, but apparently a cut lemon or a bowl of sodium bicarbonate are good for eradicating fish smells. Works for microwaves and fridges, anyroad.

Fagnolia adj. The yellowy-creamy-brown colour found on the interior walls of betting shops, pubs and the houses of chain smokers.

Definitely sugar soap on all paintwork including walls, plus windows, doorhandles, nooks/crannies etc.

Bin all soft furnishings, including carpets.

Had to do this with my father's place before selling it, smoked 40 - 60 a day, more if possible  - cleaned up well though.

Enjoy. :xmas-cool:
