Hi guys, my marin has been lying around the garage for about five years and i have decided its time to get it going again. Before it was laid up it was being neglected as i didnt have much money so its in a bit of a state, it needs all new cables wheels truing, defo needs new bottom bracket and front and rear derailers.Hopefully the cranks and casset can be reused and the forks and rear shock could do with some attention but will just live with them for a while.Keeping in mind that i dont want to spend too much does anyone know what bottom bracket and derailers i need to go with xtr chainrings and 9 speed casset (think its lx but cant remember) thanks for any help.

Look for the Shimano part number which will be on each component. Then search for it on Ebay is a good start.

Watch out for the BB - it's got splines on it that look exactly like various other Shimano BBs but which are, in fact, slightly different. Spacing and shape the same, but they're not as deep, and it's best not to put those cranks on the wrong ones.

Also your middle ring is shot to hell :)

It's a good bike, certainly well worth getting it going again. This is the original specification

You sometimes see those bottom brackets for sale, but I don't think you could say frequently. If you can't find one, you might be best advised to sell the cranks on eBay and use the money to replace with good-condition period XT/bb. You'd be surprised how much they would make - XTR always sells well and the middle ring is easily replaced.

Any bike that has been unused for that long could do with new cables, brake pads and chain, but I'd be surprised if the derailleurs need more than oiling. The pivots probably need greasing, maybe the shock and forks could do with servicing. Or if funds allow I would junk the fork and upgrade - it isn't up to the quality of the rest of the bike.

But best thing is mend the puncture and take it straight out for a ride. You might find it goes a lot better than you fear.

Try as hard as you can to save the front mech at least as they are very awquard to fit as I recently found  had to modify mine on a grinder  good fun though  well worth salvaging as the frame design you have there was thought up by john whyte the ex benneton f1 suspension designer and was the first full suspension frame to win a cross country race iirc  good luck mate
