Recommend me some modern tyres

Maxxis Minion DH or High Roller. Those are my recommendations for "off" road.

But for less rugged I think they will spoil the enjoyment to some degree, Conti's are well suited to such but don't wear well. Explorer up front Escape rear or Mountain King.

The bike you intend to fit them to and it's set up would help :)

Fire XC are still pretty good

I'm running one on the rear of the clockwork with a Nevegal StickE up front, rolls well enough & plenty of front end grip

The Orange 5 has the same StickE Nevegal up front but with the Nevegal DTC (dual compound) tyre at the rear, it gives a similar performance to the combo on the Clockwork.

StickE's should only ever be used as a front tyre, unless you like the feeling of riding through treacle....

I have used Continental Gravity tyres, but didn't like then, didn't give me confidence, seemed to lose grip without much notice, also Conti Explorers, but that was a long time ago & I've no recollection of how they handled!

Schwalbe Nobby Nic & Racing Ralph are popular choices, but they have quite thin sidewalls so they are prone to tearing at the merest hint of a rock sometimes. I believe you can get different versions which are more resilient.

Skinny XC tyres I'd say Panaracer XC Pro.
Fat do most stuff I'd say Continental Mountain King in 2.2 though I use 2.4's.

I'd agree with this. I currently use the 2.4 Mountain Kings (on my Voodoo) and 2.3 Conti Verticals (on my Identiti).
I did use the XC Pros but wanted something bigger.

Very muddy = Maxxis Swampthing 2.3.

Anything else = WTB Weirwolf 2.1.

Just my choice.

FWIW, I always have steel beads. I've seen too many folders lock up the wheels with a fast puncture at speed.

Modern tyres .. for the guvnor  this is the demise of the site..   .... nothing to see guys move along

Indeed this was foretold in the book of Revelations - the End Is Nigh!
I'd not worry overly, judging by some of the BoTM entries we get my 'modern' bike is retro anyhow.

You do realise that every single post is going to recommend different tyres don't you John?

Indeed

The Fires have been fine for the past few years. Just fancied trying something else perhaps a little beefier. Do get the odd pinch flat and ding to the rim on rockier stuff. Maybe it's the tyres, my lack of finesse or the timber I carry. Probably a combo fo all three. For whoever asked the tyres are for this.

Curious. Never seen (or had) this occur in the 20 odd years I've been riding. Anyone else experience this? Or have I just been lucky?

I only use two tyres now, i've tried many.

For really muddy conditions - Panaracer Trailraker 2.1 They will never EVER lose grip. These only tend to be use for really bad mud because they do have quite high rolling resistance.

for the other times of the year, for me then tend to be on 9 out of 12 months
Maxxis Ignitor. They roll exceptionally well last longer if you have the firmer 70a compound and grip very well in all conditions.

These have been used in Afan, the Chilterns, somerset and the south downs apart from wet chalk i've never had a problem with grip and never had a pinch flat.

On a negative note, depending on your weight (not being rude!) avoid Schwalbe and contis, i'm 14st and i've had various ones (it's what my LBS sells) and they are all suited for whippets on XC bikes. The sidewalls tend to rip in fast hard corners, very scary when it happens!!!! And get pinch flat nearly every ride.

Twice for me since 2008!

First time was a half-roll but the second time was a full 'off the rim' job after hitting a tree root near Friday Street. Strangely enough, both were Pana Cinders. :?

While out riding it happened twice in two weeks to a mate of mine at the very same spot each time!!!!

I've had it a couple times but that was thru cornering hard and the other was a massive rip in the sidewall.

My usual ride takes place in a forest with sand, roots, rocks. Conditions are totally opposite from summer to winter. The tracks can be very dry, loose or slippery.
Since august I've been using 2.1 Maxxis AdVantage tyres and their grip is surprinsingly excellent whatever the conditions and whether I'm climbing or descending. I won't be looking for other tyres until they're worn down to the thread !.
