Recommend a car for the missus

Ford Focus with a tdci engine. Should be able to get an early one (51/02) in your price range. 50mpg, quick between the gears, fit a couple of bikes in, best to drive in their class, cheap bits and from my experience (on my 3rd Focus now) never go wrong.

Without reading anything other than the topic title i'm going so say with 100% late model 5 door mk2 golf gti. Best car in the world

Going to read the thread now.

I'm not far off the mark!

How about mk4 golf 1.4. Well within budget or a tdi but you'll be at the upper end.

Stick £2k in as max price in to Autotrader and search everything for sale within 30miles. Go and have a look at a few and buy on gut instinct. If you don't know anything about cars, find someone who does and take them with you.

I picked up a nice little SEAT Ibiza for £1300 the other day. 2001(Y) with 77,000 miles, full service history and room for two bikes with the seats down. It even came with climate control

Cheers all.

Focus and Golfs are too big (apparently)

Yaris, Micra, Jazz - looks like I wasn't way off the mark, keep it Japanese.

As for reliability, lil sister's Mk3 golf has done over 208k trouble free miles and is still going strong with nothing more than regular servicing and the odd battery.

Too big, my wife drives a Ford Ranger  .

From what I have seen reliability of golfs dropped off markedly after the MK2, 3's were still OK, but my mates MK4 used to cost him £1k a year at the annual service/MOT for brokens sensors etc.

Carl.

Stodgy, 1.4 underpowered. And nothing like as deserving of the "reliable" reputation like older vee dubs.

Honda / Nissan / Toyota - nothing aspirational, but reliable as hell.
