As per the title. It needs to be small, economical max £2k though less is good. (I'm adding in that it should be able to fit at least 1 bike in the back)

I know nothing about these things so fire away with your advice please.

My ill advised thoughts were nothing French or Italian as they'd break. I was thinking Yaris or Polo. Though never having driven, what do I know?

Cheerio all!

A car for the missus, eh? You've been busy. :P

I had a Vauxhall Corsa. My dad bought it in 1996, and I bought it in 2006.

Anyway, I knew this car from new and in 120,000 miles it never once broke down. Just needed servicing, a new cambelt and other routine stuff.

Or an Agila. My dad has one of those now, and it's great; economical, really cheap to buy and run and has more space than most estate cars. I got 5 bikes in an Agila once. 8)

i have at the mo an s plate honda civic 2 door 1.4i, it's been in our family since new and has never clapped out, in that time, it has had 2 back boxes and 1 centre section. doesn't seem to rust anywhere and is comfy and not thirsty, should get 350 miles out of a 40litre tank, i get less as i have roof bars on mine, without bikes it's 320, with bikes is less and i can get 2 bikes in the back (wheels and posts out) with the seats down no problem. it will do 100mph but doesn't like it, likes to sit between 80-90 on the motorway, but is pretty quick of the mark for a small engine.

at present the value of this s plate model is £500, so if you went for a bit newer one you should have plenty of change from £2000.

every year it goes through it's mot no probs, only thing ever being tyres/wipers etc. mine looks a little tatty now but thats because i'm always leaning bikes on it and driving it up fields to go riding!!

i'd highly recommend one to anyone who needs a cheapish car.

Don't think the Corsa has ever been good to drive, well the rental and courtesy one I have driven have been awful. Reliable mostly and cheap yes but beaten easily by the Yaris, Micra, Jazz and Fiesta in their class.
I have done about 55k in my current Civic in a little over two years and it has cost me servicing and consumables only it easily fits a bike in the boot (with wheels off) and still seats 5. I would say the earlier recommendation of the 1.4 Civic is spot on.

Carl.

Remember to buy on condition as small shopping cars will get knocks and bangs in the car parks, clutches will wear quicker from town driving so be thorough with your inspection (or pay the AA to do it). Of your iriginal thoughts the Yaris should have less problems than the Polo and is not a bad bet if you can fit the bike in.

Carl.

yup civics a good buy too

the jazz is tardis like and a honda ,but mebee over 2k

My wife has an F reg 205 [950cc petrol] with lots of dents and rattles.... she loves it :) it was free.. the guy who had it before was always getting stopped by the cops when driving it
