rear derailleur set up

everything is brand new, used dremel on outers ( another marathon) if i hold the cable and use the shifter it works great back and forward bang on. i think it's just me. at the moment it goes up sweet (small up to large).but coming down is no good. i even stipped the whole thing down took chain off and started from scratch..

Have you checked your hanger is not bent? A misaligned derailleur hanger will result in poor shifting performance

hi thanks for the reply, yes it's all new gear it has to be something i'm doing or not doing more like..

sounds like its too tight, (screwed out too much)
if its not shifting down
have you adjusted you hi lo screws?
and played with the b tension screw?

A mech new out the box doesnt really need fiddling about with Hi-Lo settings, even 2nd hand its likely to be the same amount of cogs in roughly the same position :? I dont think ive ever had to set them :D

if i have it correct the high and low are only to stop it going off the two outer cogs which it isn't. the problem is moving up and down. i can get it to go great one way but that seems to throw the flow out on the other way.

yeah it is a balance but sounds like yours doesnt want to play ball!!
remember the thread on the adjuster is coarse so only needs little turns at a time
