Re-cutting/Boring out a stem! Is this possible ??

Any small light engineering shop would do this for £20.

Its a ten minute job.

I've got one locally that will mill seat posts out of frames for a score.

Saves me a lot of hassle.

If you can do that in ten minutes you can come and work for me!

The problem is setting it up. To put it on a lathe it needs to be mounted securely and have it perfectly central and straight. The would also need to be balanced to stop the machine vibrating.

Easiest way would be on a milling machine with a boring head (imagine a reverse lathe), although it's still going to be a pain to mount it solidly.

quite agree if thats a ten minute job i will give up working , that why the reamer is most lightly to be the best option ?

I remember doing this kind of centering with a magnetic clock gauge on a boring machine. Happy days

Bats you are on retrobike which is a forum of cycling enthusiasts and collectors those that restore bikes to their original state not just bung on whatever works. I really think you're missing the point...

Thanks for that Tel. I can never understand why some act this way! Maybe they just haven't got on in life well
or just like to cause trouble knowing that these people will never come face to face, the net is a good
place but also can be a bad place because they can freely give out abuse and get away with it to an extent.

Update!

Seller has a stash of stems only 25.4mm versions, no 26mm versions :?

Been to the engineers and said it can easily be done, trouble is there is a two month waiting list and the cost! £50/£100 + VAT & consumables

They also said it can be hand reamed out and could be done by myself which would work out much cheaper.

So...............................

No don't have access to a pillar drill but they said clamping the stem in an old pair of forks and steadily
enlarging the reamer will be fine and just do it a bit at a time and keep measuring until the desired size is reached.

The adjustable reamer can be purchased off ebay for £14! A tool that once used will never be used again :roll:

It's the keeping it square that you want to watch. If you can get to one it would be easy. Not to run it just to hold everything in square and centered while you turn the chuck by hand or on a very low speed..
