They are 7-speed only, SunTour hadn't moved on to 8-speed for the one year that these were available. I run a cheaper version of these as 8-speed shifters with no issues, you just have to run the largest cog as a friction shift and limit the rear mech travel with the limit screw.
Also, due to the levers being solid and the clamps being pretty hefty lumps of alloy, the cheap steel / plastic version of these are actually lighter than the high end one...!
