Raleigh?????? Randonneur possibly

Nice find! Whatever it turns out to be, the choice of parts is typical of a previous owner who knew what they were doing. I like the Middleburn cranks.

Looks like a bit of TLC and some consumables should get you on the road. Enjoy and report back, please! :)
Im hoping so. Tyre's and cables should see this good for many more miles. In fact from past experiance dome sir in the tyre's will see it up and running😉

Is it your size? I notice you might sell it.

It's not my size and I bought it mainly for the parts. I'm thinking now it's definitely not a Rando and it could possibly be a 18/23 or 501 frame at best.
Until I get home in a couple of weeks I won't be able to get to the bottom of the mystery.
The fluted chaistay and colour fit in with a Stratos from the same period but they didn't have canti brakes. The other issue is from the picture it looks factory finish on the paint. And why would you go to the expences of fitting nice parts, adding canti fitments and a full respray on a 18/23 gas pipe frame.
I wouldn't sell it until I knew what it was as I don't want to mislead anyone. The bike was sold to me on pictures alone and the seller didn't seem to have much info.

Nobody is going to spend so much time and effort fitting braze ons to a raleigh 18/28 monkey metal frame

Whoever had this knew what they were doing and what they wanted. There were lots of options in the mid 80s as to what you could order.

The red herring in the trifle is those rear stays - they date the frame to be older but the canti braze ons are a newer style . The chainset is a misdirection as its a compact jobby from the late 90s

The dome style cable stops make it slightly further up the food chain too. It may even have an SBDU frame number

Here's my more basic raleigh touriste from 1989, note the square canti mounts yet it has raleigh stays and not scalloped. It's 531 tubing even though it's the lower level cheaper tourer

Yours could even be an American model

Yeah it's a funny one alright. I had the same thoughts about the frame work on a gas pipe bike, just not worth the effort. I've had Royals with the fluted chainstays in the past but most 531 frames had either flat or Raleigh stamped ones.
I not thinking about the chainset as that is clearly a add on. (think they are quite sought after)
I think a SBDU frame would be pushing it but like you say, anythings possible and would be good as I grew up in Ilkeston.
