Raleigh Hybrid

Nice old school mountain bike :D

Hybrids are either tough slightly mtb styled and capable 700c(28inch) wheeled bikes or road tyred sanitised high geared mtb's, it all depends from which end of the spectrum you approach from

Thanks Carl! (and other posters) You have ended my seemingly endless search of the internet to try and find what bike ive picked up..ahhh. Now to purchase the mustang decal set off the bay....:D

NP, it's amazing what sticks in the mind as a child (well pre-pubesant teen anyway). The Raleigh Team bikes have always been a bit of an obsession (not that I have ever owned one) of mine and I still crave the 531 framed lightweight one from ~1990.
One of my best friends had the original black and white mustang and it was abused to death but lasted really well. That the Peugeot Alpina and Muddyfox Roadrunner are my earliest memories of MTB's.

Carl.

You dont happen to know the size of the steerer? I could probably find out but it would be easier to be told :P. Also, what do you think about buying some 700x23 forks for the front and whacking on a racing wheel? I was convinced it was a hybrid and have now bought drop bars, etc...

I never owned one myself so can't confirm anything but I did read on here a few days ago about someone else with a Mustang that it was an odd size like 1.1" or something.

Carl.

Without wishing to cause upset to Dr Carlos, I've just snared a 1990 Raleigh Mountain Bike team with a 531 frame nearly complete but in need of serious TLC for £10 :D

Also the older Raleighs do indeed have the BMX type 21.1mm steerers which makes them pretty tough but limits their choice of stems

thanks for all this advice, wonderful! sorry to keep on but......how do i find out which frame mine is? 531 etc.? Cheers Guys!

If it's a Mustang (or rebadged Mustang) then it ain't 531, or 501.

It's almost certainly plain gauge steel tubing, and rather light on lightness, if you get my drift ;-)

Probably ATT23(All Terrain Tubing) tubing which is plain gauge high tensile stuff favoured by Raleigh. Heavy but very tough, Raleighs main market was the type of customer who didn't cosit their bikes nor wish to pay top dollar. Reynolds 531 and 501 are Chromolly steel tubes that are much lighter with a degree of spring in them but also somewhat pricier.

Those old raleighs do handle quite well on and off road though
