I have decided to not sell my Claud Butler Anteaus 653. I have had it since new and said to the wife that I didn't want to part with it. Much to my surprise she said 'well don't then'. I suppose this could be to with the fact we have just come back from a spa break and she is in a great mood. Also we have been going out for rides as a family quite a bit.
So I have decided to put it back to original, bar the flite ti saddle as I want to actually ride it :D .
I am only short of a few bits really, firstly the forks and here lies the problem. It was originally specced with zocchi XC 400's but I had them swapped at the shop for Manitou 2's. Now I can get the 2's easily as there is a good set for sale here for no obscene money. Really though I want to put the XC 400's on, but I have to admit I have never seen any for sale. So what o people think the 2's or the XC's?
The other bits are a 1 1/8th headset and a Zoom stem which can be picked up easily so no worries there. There is of course another option and that is to put on a threadless set of early Judy's similar to my ruined ones. Not sure what to do really.

Carl.

As I mentioned on your FS thread, I rode one of the Magnum's BITD and loved it, just a shame it was a tad too small.

It was an awesome spec, XT, Marz' forks and Maguras. If I were you I'd put it back to factory spec. Track some Marz forks down!

As for the 1" 1/8 Zoom stem, my LBS has one, about 130mm reach and NOS. He has it up for £20. If you want me to get it for you just shout.

Excellent, glad to hear that!

As i said in your FS thread i was sad to see it broken up.

I have already made a start on the rebuild, I cleaned and polished the frame. It has an original spec XT Short cage mech on it now (I had an M900 fitted in the shop originally) that I got from the bay and I have my eye on an LX threaded headset that is NOS (it originally had a non-branded black HS on it). AS for the forks I have PM'd someone on here about some XC 600's they have that are almost identical to the XC400's, but I may wait for the 400's.
The chainset, original seat post, front mech and rear brakes are back on too. I still have the original Tange prestige flat bars as well but they need a rub down and re-spray as they have a bit of surface rust due to storage, will give them a coat of smooth hammerite next weekend.

Update on this. I have decided to go back to Manitou 2's as I did track down some XC400's but I just couldn't justify the £200 they were going to cost me. The Manitous look mint and are a far more reasonable £60 delivered. They are period correct and were what I had fitted when I brought the bike new.
I am waiting for someone to get back to me on a Zoom stem and all I need now is a headset.

Carl.

Got the Manitous this week, thanks to Archangel and a NOS Zoom stem thanls to Sticklegs (this was original spec), fitted them so I can get the bits stored safely, just waiting for the NOS FSA roller bearing headset to arrive for ibelieveinfixes next week and I can finish it off.
Only chchanges from when I brought it new are the WTB Rocket-V seat, original SPD's (which I will replace with a set of Outland platforms) and the FSA headset (original was crap).

Here it is so far:
