Project C16R

Retro Newbie
Hi, I thought I would introduce myself as I've just joined up and I'm about to tackle a restoration on my old bike.

I bought it from my friend, who only had it for a couple or years before buying a Specialised M2 Stumpjumper as an upgrade. This was in the early '90s, I honestly can't remember the year but I'm guessing 1994ish...

I've used it on and off since then, mostly off to be fair, but as I have been using it to commute to work ( only about 5 mins ride ) I feel I need to fix it up a bit.
It has been serviced every 7 years, but has spent the last year outside so it's showing signs of age, wear etc.

I'm looking for advice, possibly original parts, possibly history of this particular model - and a general boost as I'm no mechanic..!!

The bike remains exactly as I bought it, apart from the tyres which are now perishing...

It has had subtle upgrades before I bought it, so I honestly don't know what is genuine and what isn't.

Please have a look at the pictures and let me know what you think.

Regards,
Kelv

Definitely needs some love! I'd start with the frame & get rid of the rust & get it repainted. Hopefully the rust hasn't gone right through. I'd check for holes once you've cleaned it down, especially on the chain stays.

Re:

Yes, it's top of the list....

It's not something I've tackled before, do I just remove everything from the frame and then get it inspected?

Thanks.

Aye - but easy to check yourself. The bottom bracket tube would need a good inspection as they often don't have a drain hole. It could be fairly rusty in there. You could treat & paint it yourself or send it way to be done - depends how much you want to spend.

Re:

I do have a limited budget, as well as limited skills.....

I'm sure the underside of the frame is quite clean, but I think there is a cable guide in the way...

One reason I have put off dealing with the rust is not knowing if the stickers are available to put on once the rust is dealt with and the frame is sprayed...

Thanks again for your advice.

I had some decals made by Gil for a Cr16 I was going to refurb, they looked every bit as good as the originals, you can't go wrong there. I can't remember the exact price, but it was very competitive.

Good luck with the build.

Re:

I restored one recently. Here’s the build thread if it helps...

Great bikes these. They are just a clockwork which they changed the name to C16 which stands for Clockwork 16, launched on the 16th anniversary.

Think they ran with C16 and C16r (for race) for a couple of years before resorting back to Clockwork again...

Pretty sure that’s what I read...

Good luck with build.

Re:

Great work on the build thread - they look great on n black..!!

I'm not sure my skills are up to the job - my rebuild may take longer than I imagined..
