You can try it by sticking it on a disc, and booting from disc, before you decide to take the plunge. Took me a few minutes to decide, never looked back.

I used Ubuntu in order to access a virus ridden XP loaded laptop. You have to burn the OS onto a disc as an image, then Unbuntu will load on the boot. Then you choose the first option of running the OS without installing (it runs straight from the disc). Thanks to this OS, I was able to access and download my son's documents on the infected laptop before formatting an reinstalling XP. If I didn't have progs which required Windows in order to run, I use Ubuntu.
