i'm obviously missing a trick here. i charge/expect nothing in return for my technicals on friends bikes!

cake would definitely suffice. as would chocolate coated brazil nuts, chocolate buttons, pizza, hotdog. if money were edible, i might accept it....chocolate money included.

I've just done a spoke and true for some black market M and S butterscotch pancakes.They make them in bulk down the road and one of our customers works there and races with me.

That's the point I think. I do work for my friends and family because I want to and would never accept/expect payment as such. But from the other side of the coin, people are aware of what I would charge them if they were a 'normal' customer and the gesture of food/drink/gift completes the deal as it is a thank you payment rather than an actual financial exchange for goods and services.
