today I came across two sets of roadies, first lot were spread out across the road so as I aproached them from behind I tapped on the horn as a warning and held back, they dropped into single file and waved me past :D little while later I came across group 2, again spread out across the road, gave them a little toot on the horn as before as polite warning and got...the finger in return as well as a few choice words! well being in a fully spammed up company van I cant really say much due to the chance od complaints against me, so as soon as I was safely past them I tucked a set of wheels in the gutter and booted it for the next half mile, the dust cloud was that good that at one point I couldnt see or hear them chokeing on it

Nice post on a cycling site

To be fair when out on the road and in a large group it is often difficult to know what the intention of a blast on the horn from a following vehicle is. You say you meant it as a 'friendly toot'. Fair enough I suppose. You might equally have waited until the road was clear enough to overtake. In my experience the horn is normally used in an agressive manner, esp when said horn is in a spammed up company van - in which case the finger is probably to be expected.

Be a real shame if you got a nail or some glass in your company van's tyre from running it down the gutter wouldn't it now?

I have ot agree with John, 9/10 times, a car behind is a enough sound to make them fall in line, but if you dont see it happen, then i suppose a small toot is ok

Nothing wrong with a couple of toots to make them aware .. very common in Europe
To get the finger is rude BUT 2 wrongs don't make a right

Maybe better next time to think you did the right thing and the NOB giving the finger is just a NOB!!!

After all, the horn is there SOLELY to make other users aware of your presence. (If you believe everything you read in the highway code...) :P

Sounds to me that they were blocking the road ("spread out across the road"), so was it down single lane roads?
There really shouldn't be a problem with a toot of the horn, but we take it as aggression here, don't know why, probably because it's rarely used in the UK unlike Europe, but according the the Highway Code you are supposed to use it to warn others of your presence are you not, so right in this case :?:

yeah, tooting in the UK gets abuse in return.......i prefer to plant it when its safe to do so, just overtake rather than make it clear im there.

causing a dust cloud was naughty, i wouldnt of liked it done to me, not that im a roadie mind.
