Painting tips

A good post with some good tips :)

I've done my fair share of lug lining and there are a few ways and tools of getting a good result, but you definitely need an enamel paint. Humbrol gold works well but you need to stir and stir, then stir some more! Its also best if the lid is left off the tin for an hour so it thickens slightly. I can't find any gold lining pics but plenty of red :)

You can also use magnetic strips as a guide for box lining. You can buy sheets of the kind of stuff they use for magnetic learner plates and cut them into 1cm strips. stick them to your steel frame and angle the pen so you are just clear of the strip. Do your box line then remove the strip. Its slow because the paint needs to be dry before your next box line. I sell the pens if anyone is interested, £5.95 posted within the UK for RBers :)

Edit: Found some gold, this was signmakers enamel.

I don't mean to get carried away :) but you can also use a reversed vinyl mask for lettering

Forgot to add. If you are spraying then fit old bottom bracket cups to protect the b/b threads. Also a wad of rag into the top of the seat tube. make sure there are no loose threads to get onto the top tube. Like the idea of the oven. What about in the greenhouse in summer. To bake it not to spray it. Boy would I get some grief. only do mine in summer. Because I dont have anywhere inside that would be away from stuff that would be damaged I wait till there is a completely still warm day.Spray the frame outside and then whip it straight into the back of the shed out of harms way. Seems to work fine. Once the colour is on its decals from lloyds and a coat of clearcoat and then the really hard job of leaving it alone whilst everything goes off.
