It's time for this old chesnut again.

I cannot find a local firm to media blast or acid dip a frame. Steel frame, alu fork BTW. It is being powder coated, but I need to give them a bare frame. Is Nitromors good enough to prep the surface? Do you have any other suggestions? Is there a media blasting firm in Somerset that I am not aware of?

Cheers. :D

Slightly off topic, but has anyone tried a hot air gun?

I'd have thought Nitromors should work OK, if it will shift the several thousand coats of gloss off my house windows  , it'll have no worries with the skinny layer of paint on a bike frame.

Use wire wool with it , to get the paint out of the tricky bits like welds and stuff.
Just make sure it's all washed off properly before they paint it.

i used those "brillo" pads after the nitromorse , the ones with the pink soap stuff in them , cleaned the frame up a treat

If you're using paint stripper with a wire brush - WEAR GOGGLES! You will be sure that you won't get it anywhere near your eyes but a stray flick will have you cursing (and rushing to run your face under the tap).

Not a problem any more, the powder coaters in Wiveliscome will media blast the frame first, all in for £45! 8)

I was just about to say that all powder-coaters have to do shot blasting as well!

Sounds like most powder-coating is done purely for commercial renovation purposes where the appearance of the end product isn't of anything like such importance as it is to us. I wonder whether it might be worth enquiring whether for an extra few pounds they'd take extra special care/time over the shot blasting, to get the best possible finish?

I'll ask them, good idea!
