So, having decided to paint my frame myself, I was exceptionally careful to do a 'proper' job. I spent ages sanding down, and doused all the discoloured patches in rust treatment, before thoroughly degreasing. Three layers of primer, carefully rubbed smooth and de-greased between each coat, before finally hitting it with a satin black topcoat.
I think I probably would've done better just opening a tin of Hammerite and throwing it at the frame, frankly. It would've been far less time-consuming, cheaper, and more fun. I clearly must have the world's most de-sensitised fingers, as what felt like silky-smooth primer turned out to resemble molten Vienetta once the black went on - I really hope I never lose my eyesight as I'd be totally incapable. And it's not as though I could just resign myself to a 10-yard finish, as half the downtube and the chainstays have somehow 'reacted' and had a bubbling frenzy.
So time to start saving for a blast & powdercoat, then. When I really really wanted to have the bike built by this weekend: I have everything except cables & cleats. And paint on the frame, of course.
