Orange Clockwork, date?

Hi,

I've just picked up an elderly Orange Clockwork (Black with silver decals). I'm trying to identify its year and other information about it. The fella I bought it off reckons he bought it 13 years ago and it was one of the last ones you could buy. He vaguely remembers the forks being from the model superseeding the Clockwork it was that close to the end! (round shouldered forks instead of square??)

I'll try and post pictures later on, but I'm not sure if I'll have a chance to.

Any idea what year?

Any idea how much it would be worth? STX RC cranks, Mavic rims, Deore XT brakes, Deore xt shifters, Onza pedals (with cleats and elastomers). It looks like it's been a well loved bike! I picked it up for £60, I'm just wondering if I got a good deal or not!

I'm guessing the steerer is 1" so upgrading forks would be difficult?

It's safe to say that for £60 you got a good deal. Clockworks regularly sell for twice or three times that, hell I just paid more for just a frame!

Photos are a good start when it comes to dates, but check out the Manufacturers section of the gallery, all the Orange brochures are there from about 1990 to 2000. :wink:

You'll be surprised how many sets of forks appear for a 1 inch streerer when you start looking. Pace would be a good place to start. I have a set of Manitou 3's on my P7. :D

It's currently on its third incarnation, I think it was made up to 1994, then came back for 98 and 99. I thought the 'square' (and brilliant) F7 forks were introduced when they decided to rename the Clockwork the C16R in c95, so his talk of the forks coming from the following model and being round has me puzzled. You need to post a picture really.
 
Yup, that's a crush. :D Doh!

The F7 forks were deffo later, my mate has a '98 in orange/white with a pair. (He won't sell it to me though! :roll: )

I wonder what the 15 revisions were that came before the Clockwork (C)16? :?
 
The 1993/94 catalogue is in the archive section - the Clockwork on page 8 looks fairly similar

The market value depends on the condition of the parts, but I assume you bought it to use it and I would say these Oranges are classic bikes. I think my C16R is a 95 and that has the F7 H-shaped forks which are superb. I don't know to what extent the frames differ, but the C16R frame is seriously light and very lively, so it makes an excellent commuting bike and after all these years is still surprisingly capable at cross country. After all, it was the leading poor man's XC racer of its day.
