One piece triple chainset?

Re:

I've read 1x needs a clutch in the rear mech, but I don't remember that on my old 1x5 I had as a kid!

I've been using a triple crankset with a single ring on it in combination with a 7 speed cassette for the last three or four years. I originally used a standard 46t outer chainring, but when that wore out, I replaced it with a Surly stainless chainring, which is designed as a single ring, without ramps or pins to aid shifting: https://surlybikes.com/parts/drivetrain ... chainrings

With the standard chainring, I did drop the chain a couple of times, however not while shifting, but when I hit a pothole that I hadn't spotted. I can't recall ever having the chain come off with the Surly ring fitted, but it hasn't been on as long and perhaps I've just been better at avoiding potholes.

With square taper cranks, you can use different bottom bracket spindle lengths to adjust the chainline. I have mine set up so that the single ring is in the outer ring position, but lines up pretty much perfectly with the centre of the cassette at the rear.
