Reluctantly.....having always thought my wheels were perfect :facepalm: .....I have to agree with that ^^^ . Not the cheapest thing to outlay money on but definitely worth it ...and especially given most of us will be building with 20 year old aluminium hoops some of which will have already seen a lot of use.
 
Wow, I think that answers your question as to why it keeps going soft. The rim was compromised to begin with. Your rim will turn into a "crisp", or "potato chip" here in North America, from too much tension and the joint should not fail. In fact, if this happens you should be able to back off the tension and it should pop back, not that I recommend such a practice. But clearly the joint was not solid.
